Our Story

Darren Jones Company President

From the time Darren Jones was a young boy, he has been trying to  finding the answers to the basic question, “How can I solve this problem?”

When he was 14, he wanted his own phone line in his bedroom, he figured out how to reroute the telephone on the outside of the house through his bedroom window.

The problem that began Darren’s quest for a marketable solutions, was all of the mud and dirt that had accumulated on his fly line while he was fishing on the banks of the Little Blackfoot River in Idaho.  As he drove home to Utah pondering this question, he figured it out!  He would make a product that would not only clean the fly line, but protect his fingers at the same time.

Once home, he found some scrap neoprene fabric and had his wife Shellie sew up some prototypes for him. Over the next few weeks he had a working prototype and he called it the Stripee™.  It’s a product that is worn over the index and middle finger with felt pads in between the fingers that clean the fly line and protect fingers from line abrasions.  Stripee™ was the first of many ideas that answered Darren’s question of, “How can I solve this problem?”

Alpine Innovations, LLC was started in 2001 after Darren identified how to solve yet another of those many problems.  The next big breakthrough came when Darren was attending a Telecom seminar in Salt Lake City in the spring of 2002.

For lunch Darren ordered a turkey and avocado sandwich with extra mayo. It was the extra mayo that started it all.  The lanyard that held his glasses around his neck had captured all the food crumbs and a big glob of mayo as well. When he put on his glasses, all he could see was food crumbs and the mound of mayo in the middle of the left lens.  He knew this problem needed special attention. Cleaning a lens with anything but microfiber can scratch lenses, so he went out to the car to find his microfiber cloth.

After a thorough search failed to produce the cloth, he used a drinking fountain to rinse off the mayo and crumbs and then resorted to using his cotton shirt to wipe the lenses. Mayo=grease and was simply NOT coming off.

Frustrated with not having clean glasses, Darren spent the remainder of the seminar pondering the question, “How can I keep my cloth handy, and not lose it?”

Later that day he had another project for Shellie to sew. He cut some neoprene fabric used for the Stripee™ and created a small square pocket to keep the microfiber inside.  By sewing the corner of the microfiber cloth to the inside of the pouch and fastening a small plastic hook on the top of the pouch, he now had a lens cleaner pocket that he could attach anywhere.

The creation looked like a small potato - so he called it "Spudz".  Spudz® was the product that put Alpine Innovations on the map. It was a hit and has been found to be popular in many segments of the market population.  Later, Spudz® became popular product for photographers and bird watchers.

Spudz® is no small potatoes and is patented domestically and internationally. Since its creation, Alpine Innovations has sold millions all over the globe.

The question of “How can I solve this problem?” has always been the first question Darren asks and continues to drive what he expects of his company. This question leads to better solutions and improves our quality of life.
